Ready for your driving licence?

Getting your driving licence is a major milestone that opens many doors – from being able to drive to school or work, to taking spontaneous trips with friends. Before you can start your training you must have turned 16.

Before you get your driving licence for a car you must go through four steps:

  • Basic Traffic Course: If you are under 25 years old, you must complete a 17-hour course that provides you with fundamental knowledge about road safety – a must before you can practise driving.
  • Basic Driving Competence: In the second part of the basic course, you learn to handle the car with peace of mind, so that you can focus on the road.
  • Traffic Section: In the third part of the course, you get an in-depth look at different road user groups, efficient and environmentally friendly driving, risk reduction, and overtaking. This section lasts around four hours.
  • Final Training: Prepare for your driving test with an intensive 13-hour safety course that gives you all the knowledge you need to succeed.

After this, you are ready for practice driving!

How much does it cost to get a driving licence?

How and how much a driving licence costs varies depending on what type of driving licence you want to obtain. Getting a driving licence can be expensive, and there are several things you need to go through. These include driving lessons, basic traffic course, skid control training, long-distance driving, the theory test and the practical driving test.

Everything about the driving licence has calculated that it costs approximately NOK 30,000 to get a driving licence for a standard car, whilst it costs between NOK 8,000 and NOK 15,000 for a moped licence.

But getting a driving licence doesn't have to cost a fortune! Make a plan for how you can save for your driving licence. Start by creating a budget for driving lessons, the theory test and the practical test.

Start saving for your driving licence as early as possible. A good tip is to save a little bit each month. You can set up a separate savings goal in the mobile banking app where you only save for your driving licence. Set aside small amounts each month, and you'll barely notice that you're saving. You can also save for your driving licence in a separate account.

Why get a driving licence?
A driving licence gives you greater flexibility and freedom in everyday life. For those with limited public transport options or a long journey to school or work, it can be a significant advantage.

Practice driving
If you can practise driving with a family member or an acquaintance who is over 25 years old and has held a driving licence for at least five years, you can save a lot of money on driving lessons.

Your own car?

When you have finally obtained your driving licence and are considering buying a car or moped, remember that there will be additional costs such as car insurance, fuel and vehicle maintenance. Owning a car or, for example, a moped can be expensive, so it is important to plan for these expenses as well. In that case, it is wise to have a buffer account.

Car insurance: Car insurance can be expensive, especially for young drivers. The insurance can vary in price depending on the type of car, your driving pattern, and your age. It may be wise to compare different car insurance policies to find the one that suits you best.
