What happens to the share price when the company pays a dividend? When a listed company pays a dividend, the share price falls (all else being equal) by an amount corresponding to the size of the dividend. The day this occurs is set by the company paying the dividend and is referred to as the "ex-dividend" date or "ex date".

Q: Why do not all companies pay dividends?

Why do not all companies pay dividends? There can be various reasons why companies do not pay dividends. Dividends are primarily distributed when companies are performing well and have surplus profits. Some companies may nevertheless prioritise using their surplus to finance further growth. Companies with poor earnings cannot afford to prioritise dividends.

Dividend yield is the English term for the same concept. In financial markets, English terms are often used. Some Norwegians, for example, say "dividende" for dividend.

What does Ex. date stand for? Ex. date is an abbreviation for "ex-dividend date", from which date the share is traded without the right to dividend. Some also say ex-day. In cases where companies have not announced an ex. date for when the share is traded ex-dividend, we have assumed that this will occur the day after the general meeting. However, this may change.

What are dividend shares?

"Dividend shares" are shares in companies that normally pay dividends to their shareholders. When you are a shareholder, you are entitled to your proportion of the value the company creates. If the company performs well, the general meeting may decide to pay out dividends. A dividend is a cash payout on a share you own. The number of shares you own therefore determines the size of the dividend, and the number of votes you have at the general meeting.

When and how often are dividends paid?

Dividends are paid when the general meeting of the company decides to distribute a proportion of the profit to shareholders. Dividend payments normally occur annually (Annual), semi-annually (Semi-annual) or quarterly (Quarter), but can also be paid on an extraordinary (irregular) basis.

More frequent dividends becoming increasingly common

In recent years, we have seen an increasing number of companies moving to dividends several times a year, either twice per year, once per quarter or even monthly. Particularly within shipping and energy, we see that more companies are choosing this approach.

What does ex-dividend mean?

When a dividend has been finally approved for payment, it is too late to buy the share to receive the announced dividend. After that, the share can only be traded ex-dividend (Ex-div). In cases where companies have not yet announced a final date for when the share will trade ex-dividend, you can assume this will occur the day after the general meeting.

Tax on share dividends

Dividends are share income that is subject to tax. The percentage rate you must pay is determined by the parliamentary majority through the national budget.

Dividends received in 2025 are added to income on the tax return for the same year and reported in 2026.

You must pay tax on the entire dividend amount minus a so-called "shielding deduction". The shielding rate, or shielding deduction, more or less follows the bank interest rate and is set by the Norwegian Tax Administration each year. The principle is that you only need to pay tax on share gains, or dividends, higher than the risk-free rate.

Dividend Tax Rate 2025/2026

The basic dividend tax rate is 22 per cent. In 2022, it was decided that the rate should be multiplied by 1.72 for individuals. This gives a tax rate of 37.84 per cent. This rate still applies.
