Practise driving in a car

Where you go to practise driving should depend on how proficient you have become. It’s a good idea to start practising in open spaces or on low-speed with minimal traffic. When you eventually gain more experience, you can practise at higher speeds, on motorways, in busy areas and other places.

Anyone who supervises your driving practice must be over 25 years of age, have had a driving licence for a vehicle continuously for the last five years, and be in a condition to drive, for example, not intoxicated or ill.

Private individuals are not allowed to accept payment for supervising your driving practice. Only teachers at approved driving schools or course organisers can accept payment for instructing.

When you’re practice driving, you need a car with a sign at the back with a clearly visible L on a white background. Your supervisor needs an extra mirror to monitor the traffic behind.

If you are practising for a class B driving license, you must drive a vehicle that is in class B (total weight of max 3,500 kg and 8 passengers in addition to the driver) and be in a good enough condition to drive (EU-approved, without faults or defects that affect its safety, insured, and with a valid vehicle registration certificate).

Yes, you may have other passengers in the car while practice driving. Remember that your supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat next to you.

When practice driving, you’ll need to have your provisional licence – either digital or physical – with you. In addition, you must carry valid proof of identity.

The rules for practice driving in Norway only apply in Norway. If you are going to drive abroad, you must familiarise yourself with and follow the rules for practice driving in the country you are in.

The supervisor is considered the driver of the vehicle when practice driving, even if that person is sitting in the passenger seat and not behind the steering wheel.
